Being West Indian-American has its advantages and disadvantages. You get the best of both worlds but at the same time your not really accepted in either one. As a child you hear your parents speaking with an accent (not langauge) and you pick up on it, but if you try to use an accent around them they’re quick to tell you “Stop, don’t mek fun of me”. So then you go to school and certain words you cant help to say with an accent like 3 (tree) or like me i use to pronounce tuesday (choos-day), I was quickly corrected by my american class mate shortly after she made fun of me. It doesn’t stop there though, in the 3rd grade my mother made me a hero sandwich which is usually made with a italian loaf….nope, not mine, I had a hero made with jamaican hard dough bread with a bottle of sorrel…..right. It gets even better, To this day im still explaining to people the difference between Guyana and Ghana. Guyana is a country in South America, considered to be part of the West Indies. There’s been controvery about wether we should be considered West Indian or South American, I dont give a shit Im proud to be West Indian. Ghana on the other hand is in Africa, no relation. I refuse to speak with the little accent I developed overtime around anyone because the first thing you hear is “are you jamaican??” Trinidadian, Jamaican, Guyanese, St.Vincent, Bajan accents are soo different but not to the untrained ear. At the end of the day I wouldnt want it any other way, Its who I am, much luv to all West Indians.

I respect each and everyone of these individuals for not fitting the typical “Black” stereotype and having goals and being educated….however
They’re a hot mess on the low…especially the one on the end..
